Eating:
For those with difficulty controlling their hand movements, use a non-skid surface under dishes to prevent sliding of dishes, and cutlery during eating. It is useful to find ways to encourage independence and as much self reliance as possible.
Settings for meals should contain only the most necessary utensils. Try to serve only a couple of things at a time rather than too much selection which can be confusing. It is useful to switch to bowls rather than using plates so food can be scooped up with a spoon.
Have the dishes a different color from the place mat so that the plate can be more easily seen.
Try to keep foods moist for easier swallowing. For instance, avoid peanut butter and similar foods that tend to stick.
