Caregiving Tips
In the Bedroom:
Do not use electric blankets or heating pads. They may present a hazard as the heat may be too much for delicate skin. There is always the danger that the heating elements themselves may become exposed presenting an electrical hazard.
Install night lights in the bedroom, bathroom and hallways.
Tuck lamp, telephone and TV cords out of the way to prevent accidental falls. Attach such cords to walls with tape. Do not use nails or staples as they may break the enclosed wiring causing a fire hazard.
Try to purchase night clothes that are loose and comfortable. Elastic at wrists should not constrict blood flow.
Consider installing a sound monitor (typically used for babies) in the bedroom for safety sake.
Do not use bath sponges on delicate or fragile skin. They are of a rough texture and accumulate bacteria which can result in infections and skin irritation. For best results use a soft textured, washable cotton cloth or mitt.
